Ovation Star – Belen Barajas

Meet Belen Barajas, Patient Services Coordinator, Ovation San Antonio

It can be easy to forget how overwhelming the infertility treatment process can be when you’re immersed in it every day as part of your job. However, Belen Barajas always considers the patient and what they’re feeling as she guides them as the patient services coordinator at Ovation® Fertility San Antonio.

Belen Barajas, Patient Services Coordinator

How Did You Get Into Your Line of Work?
I’ve always loved working with patients to guide them through the process of being seen by a doctor and getting the care they need. When I lived in Laredo, Texas, I worked as a new patient coordinator in the oncology field.

About two years ago, I moved to San Antonio. When I started looking for a job, I knew I still wanted to work with patients. However, I was interested in exploring a new field that made a difference in people’s lives.

When I saw an opening in the Ovation lab in San Antonio, I thought it would be a great fit, and I was right. Fertility is very different from oncology, but it’s still meaningful and rewarding work that I love.

What Is an Average Day of Work Like for You?
I come to work at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. I start by attending to the patients who are here for IUI sperm washes. This involves making sure their consents are completed and ensuring that the lab has the doctor’s orders and special instructions. I’ll also take the patient payments and check them in before escorting them to their lab room and explaining the next steps.

When I’m not doing that, I’m answering phone calls and helping patients understand their upcoming procedures. We do so much in our lab, so I could be talking about FET one minute and IVF or IUI the next. I’m glad I can be there to answer each patient’s questions and put their minds at ease because the treatment process can be overwhelming without guidance and support.

What’s Your Favorite Part of Working for Ovation?
Ovation is the best company I’ve worked for. It offers such a great support system and there’s always someone to go to if you have a question, whether that person is in the lab or at corporate.

I also love my team in San Antonio. We all get along so well and have great camaraderie. I think this closeness is one of the reasons we work so well together.

What Do You Like About Working in Fertility Care?
When I first meet patients, they’re in the middle of a struggle to have a baby. It’s amazing to know most of them will eventually be able to have their dream of having a family come true. I think it’s an honor to be a part of this journey for them.

What Do You Like To Do for Fun?
I love spending time with my family and traveling with my teenage son and daughter. I’m also a football mom at heart, so I enjoy going to my son’s football games. Country dancing is another passion of mine.
