For Ashley and Patrick Sullivan of Austin, a positive pregnancy test was the happy culmination of a long and frustrating fertility journey. But because they were chosen to participate in a special study by Ovation Fertility in conjunction with Texas Fertility Center, the Sullivans got to witness something that very few IVF patients ever see: images of their embryos actually developing in the laboratory.

The Sullivans and other study participants were asked to share their thoughts about time-lapse videos of their growing embryos, captured inside a special incubator at the Ovation Fertility Austin laboratory. On the other side of the world, images of the embryos were being processed by a computer, testing the theory that artificial intelligence can be used to determine which embryos are most likely to result in a successful pregnancy.
