Dr. Melanie Freeman: Passionate about Helping People Become Parents

Melanie R. Freeman, PhD, with more than 30 years of experience as an embryologist and has spent the past 25 years as a medical laboratory director, specializing in embryology, andrology and endocrine laboratory science. She is currently the medical laboratory director at Ovation Fertility™ Nashville, which serves patients in an extensive area of the southeastern United States, in addition to the greater Nashville – Middle Tennessee area, Kentucky, and numerous other countries.

Under Dr. Freeman’s leadership, the Nashville IVF lab became one of the first in the country to achieve accreditation by the College of American Pathologists’ Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program. Dr. Freeman also serves as an inspector for the program.

Dr. Freeman began her career in clinical laboratory medicine as an embryologist at the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Research at Vanderbilt University, where she was instrumental in establishing IVF laboratory techniques and IVF-related research protocols.

Dr. Freeman is a licensed medical laboratory director and is accredited by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) as a high complexity laboratory director (HCLD) and Clinical Consultant (CC). She has conducted extensive cancer research in laboratories at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, Colorado; Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in Menlo Park, California; and Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

She continues to conduct research related to IVF, and has presented her research at annual meetings for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Her findings have been published in scientific journals, including Fertility and Sterility and Human Reproduction, for which she also serves as an ad hoc reviewer.

She completed her undergraduate degree in biological science and master’s degree in radiation biology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and her doctorate in human physiology at Meharry Medical College in Nashville.
