Ovation Fertility Newport Beach Lab Director, Mitchel C. Schiewe, PhD, Recognized as Industry Leader
The high complexity lab director at our Ovation Fertility Newport Beach IVF lab has strongly advanced the field of reproductive biology with his service, research findings and leadership contributions spanning four decades. In conjunction with fellow laboratory scientists and clinicians, his life’s work has helped position IVF labs all over the world to successfully protect and transfer embryos in the blastocyst stage and improve patients’ pregnancy rates.
Dr. Schiewe is best known for his published work on laparoscopic embryo transfer; embryo toxicology; oocyte/embryo vitrification; laser hatching and embryo culture of blastocysts; intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI); and now, preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). He has published more than 45 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and 125 scientific abstracts and presentations. Additionally, he serves as a scientific reviewer for several journals including Nature, Assisted Reproduction & Genetics, Reproductive Biomedicine Online and Cryobiology.
After earning his bachelor of animal science degree from the University of California at Davis, Dr. Schiewe completed his master of animal science at Louisiana State University and a PhD from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He began his career as an intern and research associate with the Smithsonian Institution at the National Zoological Park embryo research program, traveling to two continents to advance the field of conservation biology. He performed post-doctoral research at the National Institutes of Health as an NSF Fellow. Subsequently, Dr. Schiewe accepted an academic appointment at University of California, Irvine, in 1993 and transitioned into reproductive medicine.
At the Center for Reproductive Health, UCI, Irvine, Dr. Schiewe conducted leading-edge research, pioneering efforts in human sperm injection, laser hatching and egg freezing, while serving as the director of micromanipulation.
He has served as a laboratory director of IVF and embryology since 1995 in California and Italy. He joined Ovation Fertility Newport Beach in 2007 as lab director and serves as research director for the Ovation Fertility corporate operation.
Dr. Schiewe holds active memberships in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), European Society for Human Reproduction & Embryology (ESHRE), Society for Cryobiology, American Association of Bioanalysts and Alpha (International Society for Embryologists). Dr. Schiewe founded the Society for Reproductive Biologists and Technologists (SRBT) within ASRM, and is frequently asked to serve in leadership posts.
